Frank Hoy, Ph.D

Keeping the Family Business Entrepreneurial and Competitive
Frank Hoy is the Paul Beswick Professor of Entrepreneurship and Director of the Collaborative for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He received his Ph.D. in Management from Texas A&M University. From 1991 to 2001, Dr. Hoy served as dean of the College of Business Administration at UTEP, where he launched UTEP's Centers for Entrepreneurial Development, Advancement, Research and Support. Prior to that appointment, he was at Georgia State University as the Carl R. Zwerner Professor of Family-Owned Businesses.

Dr. Hoy's research concentrations are family business, entrepreneurship and economic development, franchising, and technology entrepreneurship. He is a past editor of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and was editor for Latin America for the Journal of World Business. His most recently co-authored books are Entrepreneurial Family Firms (2010) and Small Business Management (2012). Hoy is a Fellow of the Family Firm Institute, the International Council for Small Business, the International Family Enterprise Research Academy, and the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

The Rise of a Patriarch – The Fall of a Family Business

Douglas D. Box, MBA Since 2005, Doug has worked as a consultant to the family owned firm. Based in Dallas, he practices under the name Box Family Advisors and helps families with succession planning, conflict management and family meeting facilitation.

Doug brings personal experience to his understanding of the complexities of families working together. As the youngest of four sons, Doug grew up and worked in a family oil & gas business founded by his father. The Box Family controlled a number of public and private companies with interests in oil & gas, cement manufacturing and real estate. Following his father's sudden death and a litigious four-year family ordeal, Doug led the sale of the family oil and gas concern known as Box Energy Corp.

Doug has an MBA from Baylor University and a masters in Dispute Resolution from SMU. He also holds the Certificate in Family Business Advising and has been a member of the Family Firm Institute since 2005. Doug and his wife have 3 children.
